This volume of the Schiffer Automotive Series is devoted to the Alfa Romeo convertibles that, under the name of "Spider", have won great numbers of admirers all over the world since the appearance of the famous Giulietta. We have tried to bring together the important advertising material from various eras and obtain authentic factory photos in order to show the vehicles as they left the assembly line. With few exceptions, all Spider bodywork was made by either Pininfarina or Touring, and we are indebted to these firms for their documentary materials. The firm of Alfa Romeo in Arese and their German representatives in Frankfurt am Main have also contributed to our materials. In addition, the assistance of Messrs. Georg Amtmann, Robert Horender, Kai Jacobsen and Jan Norbye has also enriched this volume. As an illustrated book of automobile nostalgia, this volume of the Schiffer Automotive Series will surely awaken memories of the Fifties among the older generation—in those days one bought an Alfa from an NSU dealer!—or inspire dreams among the younger automobile fans, to whom a Spider from Italy is an undying classic, a timeless piece of perfect technology that can still be bought. Still—for how long there will still be an Alfa Romeo Spider, no one can say.
