Description

ISBN: 9780857332707, Author: Mel Nichols

Nobody, before or since, has achieved the same level of immediacy of writing style as Mel Nichols, wrote Peter Robinson, the acclaimed automotive journalist, in 2011. His Convoy article, telling the breathtaking story of driving a trio of Lamborghinis from Sant'Agata to London, took the genre to its peak. People still quote the first paragraph perfectly.'

That classic driving tale, one that Jeremy Clarkson also admires above all others, is among the 50 stories in And The Revs Keep Rising, the long-awaited collection of Mel Nichols' finest driving pieces from his distinguished 40-year career as a journalist and editor. Nichols is best-known for his editorship of CAR magazine from 1974 to 1981, a period when he, in the words of L.J.K. Setright, brought CAR from notoriety to fame', and half of the stories in this book date from that time.

That era brought a profusion of supercars and Nichols drove them all. Many of the jewels came from Italy, so Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Maseratis — and the people who created them — feature prominently. Among the highlight stories from these years are Mr Ferrari is waiting to see you, an account of an audience in Maranello, and Monaco to Modena — fast, which describes a sensational road trip with Lamborghini engineer Bob Wallace in a Countach LP400.

The range of driving experiences in And The Revs Keep Rising is broad, from track icons such as Jaguar D-type and Ferrari 250 GTO to the author's own MGA 1600 and Alfa Romeo 2000 GTV. German supercars include Porsche 911 Turbo, BMW M1, Porsche 959 and three species of Audi quattro. Among the British greats are Bentley 'R' Type Continental, Aston Martin Volante and McLaren Fl. The story on the Fl — Okay mate, that's probably enough — is published for the first time in And The Revs Keep Rising. The author's formative years in his native Australia are recalled with stories on Holden Monaro GTS 350 and Ford Falcon GT-HO Phase III.

And The Revs Keep Rising puts you in the driving seat of the most exciting cars ever made. Relax and enjoy the ride.

    Derestriction...

Posted by Jamie C. on 7th Jan 2016

There was a time when in all Australian states and territories, Europe and North America had derestricted highways where the onus was on the driver was responsible to drive to the prevailing conditions of the road, their car and their driving skill and experience. This scenario didn't result in all drivers undertaking maximum velocity but instead each driver drove at a pace matched to conditions. You can still witness this scenario in Germany with their derestricted autobahn network where all drivers drive to the conditions and most importantly adhere to the rule of 'Keep right unless overtaking' coupled with all commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle mass of greater than 4,500 kg speed limited to 80 km/h so that throughput is maintained. In Australia we currently have speed limits that are ruthlessly policed, 'Keep left unless overtaking' never policed leading to congestion, frustration and fatigue coupled with a driver licencing process that completely ignores training and assessment of driver skills. Mel Nichols' 'And the revs keep rising' tells his story from a young motoring journalist from an Australian newspaper through to the world's best automotive magazines of Wheels and Sports Car World, both Australian and CAR and Autocar in the United Kingdom. To tell his story it is not an autobiography of his life. but instead is conveyed with 53 reviews of high performance cars from a Holden Monaro 350 in 1970 through to a Porsche Boxster S in 2001. Each of these 53 reviews provide you with an insight to the individual cars, the characters within the manufacturer of each and most importantly Mel Nichols enables you to imagine what each of those cars would be like to drive. Thank you Mel Nichols and his Australian colleagues Steve Cropley and Peter Robinson for sharing your passion, understanding and the joy of driving.
