The 19th running of this extraordinary garden party for motor sport and motoring fans was the biggest ever, with a record crowd of 181,000 people converging on the Earl of March's Sussex estate to celebrate the 2011 theme of "Racing Revolutions — Quantum leaps that shaped motor sport".
At the heart of the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed was a spectacular homage to the Indianapolis 500 race in its centenary year.There were Indy cars from every decade, many of them never seen in Europe before.Winning drivers included Emerson Fittipaldi, Parnelli Jones, Bobby Unser, Johnny Rutherford. Al Unser. Jr.Bobby Rahal, Gil de Ferran, Helio Castroneves, Danny Sullivan and 2011 winner Dan Wheldon.
Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the famous E-Type, Jaguar was at the heart of the event with an unbelievable sculpture, in the shape of their iconic E-Type, towering above Goodwood House. On the track there were Jaguars galore,all the racing'Big Cats' from C-Type to D-Type to the mighty Walkinshaw Le Mans winners of more recent times.
For Jaguar fans, the 2011 Festival was a mecca. The Fl teams were OUE in force with Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull, Renault, Lotus,Williarns and Mercedes all bringing airs to be driven by superstar drivers including Lewis Hamiltondenson Button, Mark Webber, Nico Rosberg,Vicaly Petrov and Bruno Buena.
On the ever-popular Forest Rally Stage Skoda blew the fans away with their all-conquering Fabia driven between the trees by up and coming star Andreas Mikkelsen, while a fantastic collection of the much-missed Group B turbo airs reminded rally fans of the good old days of theWRC.
A hugely popular new innovation for 2011 was the GAS arena where Goodwood Active Sports had assembled a star-studied gathering of the world's top riders of pedal bikes and motorcycles. Performing breathtaking tricks and stunts on two wheels were Robbie Maddison, Danny MacAskill, Dougic Lampkin and Kyle Forte who jumped, back-flipped, wheelied and raced head-to-head around the arena in a blur of skill and courage.
In a more tranquil setting the unique Cartier Style et Luxe design competition drew another set of mouth-watering rare automobiles from their hiding places around the world.A feast for the eyes on the sunlit lawns around Goodwood House.
Up in the air the Red Arrows acrobatic team flew on three Oat of the four days while on the Sunday it was the turn of the only flying AvroVulcan to impress the enthusiastic crowds.
