Manual Introduction
In producing this manual for Ford Festiva and Mazda 121 we have made available the technical knowledge and information our staff of automotive engineers have gained over years of servicing motor vehicles. We trust the information contained in this manual will not only help you to a better understanding of the operation of the vehicle and its various systems but will also assist you when carrying out troubleshooting, maintenance and repairs.
In this manual, we have compiled the service and repair procedures which we consider to be within the ability of the average home mechanic. Where specialised knowledge or equipment is required, we have included the removal and installation procedures so that the user can remove the unit for overhaul by a specialist, or for an exchange unit to be installed.
Specifications and dismantled views of assemblies have been included to assist those with the knowledge to do the job.
Vehicles of the types covered by this manual were taken into our workshop where the maintenance and repair procedures were checked. To ensure that the reader can readily identify the components and the operations described in the text, detailed photographs and line illustrations were produced during the workshop research for inclusion throughout this manual.
Each chapter contains procedures for the removal and installation of components and where applicable instructions for the testing, overhaul and adjustment of them. All relevant specifications and torque wrench settings are contained in the Technical Data chapter at the front of the manual.
Inexperienced operators should not attempt a service or repair operation before completely reading the appropriate chapter, or other chapters that may be referred to, in the manual.
Proper service and repair is important to the safe, reliable operation of motor vehicles. Procedures recommended and described in this book are effective methods of performing service operations. Some require the use of tools specially designed for the purpose and should be used as recommended. Note that this book also contains various safety procedures and cautions which should be carefully followed to minimise the risk of personal injury or the possibility that improper service methods may damage parts or render the vehicle unsafe. It is also important to understand that these notices and cautions are not exhaustive. Those performing a given service procedure or using a particular tool must first satisfy themselves that neither their safety nor vehicle safety will be jeopardised by the service method selected. |
