Introduction
This Gregory's Service and Repair Manual covers the two wheel drive non turbocharged, single overhead cam KF and KH model Laser introduced in March 1990 and the Mazda 323 and Astina introduced in October 1989.
The Laser range includes Hatchback and Sedan models. The Mazda range includes Astina and Sedan models.
The Laser models are available in four main variants; L, GL, S and Ghia.
The Mazda Astina range is available in only one trim level. The trim level of the sedan varies according to the engine fitted.
Two engines are available, the 1.6 litre carburettor and the 1.8 litre ER electronic fuel injection. Electronic fuel injection is available on the 1.8 litre engine only.
All engines are basically of the same design, having a cast iron block and 16 valve alloy cylinder head. The single overhead camshaft is driven by a toothed rubber belt on all engines.
The engine drives the front wheels through a five speed manual transaxle or an optional three or four speed automatic transaxle.
Front and rear suspensions are fully independent with MacPherson struts. Front stabiliser bars are installed on some models. Rear stabiliser bars are installed on all models.
Steering is by a manually operated rack and pinion steering gear with power steering available as an option on some models.
The vacuum servo assisted brake system operates ventilated disc brakes on the front wheels and solid disc or drum brakes on the rear wheels. The handbrake lever operates the rear brakes via cables.
Certain repair jobs covered in this manual require the use of special equipment not normally found in a home tool kit. When such equipment is required, the equipment and its function is brought to the users attention underneath the heading for that component. Some jobs such as automatic transaxle overhaul, should be left to a Ford or Mazda dealer, or a specialist who has the extensive knowledge and equipment required. In these cases, the removal and installation procedures are fully covered enabling the unit to be removed for repair or a reconditioned unit to be installed.
Inexperienced operators should not attempt a service or repair operation before completely reading the appropriate section (or other sections which may be referred to) in the manual. |
