Description
This Gregory's Service and Repair Manual covers the fully imported Mitsubishi Mirage and Lancer CE Series vehicles released in July 1996. The Mirage is only available as a three door hatchback. The Lancer two door coupe and four door sedan is covered. GLi, GLXi, MR and VRX variants are included in this manual.
The Lancer is equipped with either a 1.5 litre or 1.8 litre engine while the Mirage is available with a 1.5 litre engine only. Both engines feature sequential fuel injection, a single overhead camshaft operating three valves per cylinder on 1.5 litre engines and four valves per cylinder on 1.8 litre engines, a cross flow alloy cylinder head and a cast iron cylinder block. A direct fire ignition system is fitted to 1.8 litre models, while a distributor is fitted to 1.5 litre models. The camshaft is driven by a toothed rubber timing belt which must be renewed at 100, 000 km intervals.
All models are equipped with an engine immobiliser as standard equipment. This system relies on a coded signal from the ignition key to the engine ECU to allow the engine to be started. The vehicle will not start if the engine ECU does not recognise this signal.
The power of the engine is transmitted to the front wheels via a five speed manual or a four speed, electronically controlled automatic transaxle. The electronically controlled transaxle adapts to different driving styles and conditions and therefore eliminates the need for power and economy modes and an overdrive switch.
Rack and pinion, power assisted steering is standard equipment on Lancer models. Mirage models feature manual rack and pinion steering, with power assistance available an option. The independent front suspension comprises of MacPherson strut assemblies with coil springs, control arms and a stabiliser bar to improve stability when cornering. The independent multi link rear suspension consists of strut type suspension units with coil springs, upper and lower control arms, trailing arms and control links. The vacuum assisted, dual circuit braking system consists of ventilated discs with single piston calipers at the front and drums at the rear. The handbrake operates the rear drums via a cable arrangement.
A supplemental restraint system (SRS) consisting of either a driver's or a driver's and front passenger's airbag is available as an option on both the Lancer and Mirage range of models. The airbags are installed within the horn pad and the dashboard crash pad. They are deployed after receiving signals from various impact sensors, in the event of a heavy collision, to form a cushion to the driver/passenger. |
