This Gregory's Service and Repair manual covers the Japanese built Mitsubishi Pajero equipped with a 2.6 litre petrol engine, introduced in 1983. The Pajero is a four wheel drive vehicle available in short and long wheelbase models.
The 2.6 litre engine is a four cylinder, overhead camshaft design with a counter balance shaft installed to reduce engine vibration. Five speed manual transmission is standard on all models and a four speed automatic transmission is available on ND and NE model Superwagons.A transfer case is attached to the rear of the transmission which allows selection of four wheel drive in high or low ratio. When four wheel drive is engaged, drive is transmitted through the front axle assembly to the front hubs. Free wheeling hubs are available on all models and allow the front drive shafts to be disengaged from the front hubs when four wheel drive is not selected, which helps to reduce wear and noise.
The suspension consists of leaf springs and telescopic shock absorbers at the rear with independent double wishbone, torsion bar and telescopic shock absorbers employed at the front.
All models are equipped with disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. The front and rear brakes are vacuum assisted.
This manual includes information on; trouble shooting, lubrication, specifications and the removal, installation and overhaul of components which are considered to be within the scope of the average, well equipped home mechanic. Certain repair jobs covered in this manual require the use of special equipment not normally found in a home tool kit. When such equipment is required, the equipment and its function is brought to the user's attention underneath the heading for that component.
