Nissan Patrol GU Series Petrol, Diesel 1998 - 2011 Workshop Manual
Nissan Patrol GU Series 1998 - 2004 Service & Repair Manual covers:
Wagon, CAB Chassis, DX, ST
2.8 Litre Turbo
3.0 Litre Turbo
4.2 Litre Turbo
& non-turbo
This Gregory's Service and Repair Manual covers the fully imported Nissan Patrol GU, GU II and GU III Series range of vehicles, fitted with several different engines: the 2.8 litre, 3.0 litre or 4.2 litre turbo diesel engines and the 4.2 litre non-turbo diesel engine.
This manual covers the station wagon and pickup models with DX and ST variants.
The 2.8 litre turbocharged, intercooled, overhead camshaft diesel engine has six cylinders, indirect injection and a rotary injection pump. The timing belt, which drives the camshaft and the injection pump, must be renewed every 100,000 kilometres to prevent serious engine damage.
The 3.0 litre, four-cylinder turbocharged, intercooled engine features electronically controlled direct fuel injection with double overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. The valves are adjustable by means of a shim and bucket arrangement.
There are three different 4.2 litre, six-cylinder engines used. The TD42 non-turbocharged diesel, the TD42T turbocharged diesel and the TD42Ti turbocharged, intercooled diesel engine. All engines share the same block and cylinder head design with minor specification changes between models.
To ensure a long service life from the turbo, a quality engine oil must be used. Always change the oil at the intervals recommended in Routine Maintenance (chapter 2). It is also important that the engine is not raced prior to being shut down and that it is not immediately raced upon starting up.
All engines have a cast iron cylinder block and an aluminium cylinder head. The 3.0 litre engine incorporates two balance shafts, Nissan's M-fire combustion system and a cradle type main bearing cap. The power steering and vacuum pumps are gear driven by the crankshaft via helical cut gears.
Two fully synchronised five speed manual transmissions are available as standard equipment on both models with an electronically controlled four speed automatic transmission available as an option on the ST model for all years and available on the 2003 and later DX models.
The automatic transmission features "power" and "normal" shift modes.
A two speed transfer case with rear limited slip differential is standard on all models, with auto locking free wheeling hubs available on the ST model. DX models have conventional free wheeling hubs which must be engaged manually. As this vehicle is fitted with a part time 4WD system, it must not be driven on hard surfaces in 4H or 4L, as damage or breakage to driveline components may result.
All models are equipped with front multi-link long travel coil spring suspension with a stabiliser bar. DX models are equipped with either coil spring or leaf spring rear suspension. Power steering, power door locks, engine immobiliser and ventilated four wheel disc brakes are standard equipment on both models, with an optional full-floating axle rear end with drum brakes available on some models.
A driver's side airbag is standard equipment on all models, with optional passenger and side airbags.
The ABS system electronically controls the brake fluid pressure to prevent wheel lock, improving directional and steering stability during emergency braking situations.
Refer to Body (chapter 17) for airbag safety precautions prior to working on the vehicle.
The body of the vehicle is rubber mounted to a ladder type steel frame chassis. |
