Introduction

The new BMW 5-Series was introduced in April 1996 and was originally available with a choice of 2.0 litre (1991 cc), 2.5 litre (2494cc) and 2.8 litre (2793cc) DOHC 24V engines. In September 2000 the range was 'facelifted' with minor cosmetic revisions, and the engine range was extended to include 2.2 litre (2171cc) and 3.0 litre (2979cc). At first, models were available in four-door Saloon form only, but later Touring estate models became available.

All engines are derived from the well-proven engines which have appeared in many BMW vehicles. The engines covered by this manual are of six-cylinder double-overhead camshaft design, mounted longitudinally with the transmission mounted on its rear. Both manual and automatic transmissions are available. All models have fully-independent front and rear suspension, manufactured almost entirely from aluminium.

A wide range of standard and optional equipment is available within the BMW 5-Series range to suit most tastes, including central locking, electric windows, air conditioning, an electric sunroof, an anti-lock braking system, a traction control system, a dynamic stability control system, and numerous airbags. Provided that regular servicing is carried out in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations, the BMW should prove reliable and very economical. The engine compartment is well-designed, and most of the items requiring frequent attention are easily accessible.

Your BMW 5-Series manual

The aim of this manual is to help you get the best value from your vehicle. It can do so in several ways. It can help you decide what work must be done (even should you choose to get it done by a garage). It will also provide information on routine maintenance and servicing, and give a logical course of action and diagnosis when random faults occur. However, it is hoped that you will use the manual by tackling the work yourself. On simpler jobs it may even be quicker than booking the car into a garage and going there twice, to leave and collect it. Perhaps most important, a lot of money can be saved by avoiding the costs a garage must charge to cover its labour and overheads.

The manual has drawings and descriptions to show the function of the various components so that their layout can be understood. Tasks are described and photographed in a clear step-by-step sequence. References to the 'left' and 'right' of the vehicle are in the sense of a person in the driver's seat facing forward.
