Book Introduction
The Audi 80 in its various forms has well deserved the title car of the year which was bestowed on it when it first appeared. It has been produced with a 1300 cc engine and with a 1500 cc engine. This book also deals with the North-American version, the Audi Fox.
We took all the major components of one of these cars to pieces and rebuilt them. The project vehicle had 17000 miles on the speedometer. No special tools were used, although some time and exasperation could have been saved if we had had acess to them, so we have pointed out where special tools are invaluable.
There are some jobs which cannot be done by the D-I-Y owner because they involve jigs and measuring instruments which are not available outside the VW/Audi organization. In these cases we have pointed out why the job should not be undertaken.
The vehicle is a fine piece of engineering which needs looking after if it is to give of its best. We hope that the owner may be helped by getting out the Haynes manual.
Repair Manual Use
The book is divided into fourteen Chapters. Each Chapter is divided into numbered Sections which are headed in bold type between horizontal lines. Each Section consists of serially numbered paragraphs.
Procedures, once described in the text, are not normally repeated. If it is necessary to refer to a particular paragraph in another Chapter the reference is self-explanatory (eg; 'Chapter 1/5:5'). Cross-references given without the use of the word 'Chapter' apply to a Section in the same Chapter (eg; 'See Section 8' means also 'in this Chapter').
All illustrations carry a caption. Where the illustration is designated as a Figure the reference is merely a sequence number for the Chapter. Where the illustration is not designated as a Figure lie; photographs) the reference number pinpoints the relevant Section and paragraph of the Chapter in which the photograph appears.
When the left or right side of the vehicle is mentioned it is as if looking forward from the rear of the car.
