MG is a marque that refuses to die. After a series of ownership changes, for a while in the 1980s it seemed that Britain's favourite sports car would be consigned to the history books. Then came the MGF, with the famous octagonal badge gracing a new generation of affordable roadsters. The MG name was promoted with fresh vigour, and the glamorous range of MG performance saloons gave an injection of excitement to the MG Rover product line. What the future holds remains to be seen, but one thing is sure: few marques have such a rich and fascinating past as that of MG.
MG has always been stylish. Company founder Cecil Kimber brought a faultless sense of line and shape to pre-war models, with their sweeping running boards and separate headlamps. These characteristics were followed through in the first post-war models of the celebrated T-Series, perhaps the archetypal British sports car of the 1940s and 1950s. With the Z Magnettes came monocoque body construction, then in 1955 the MGA was introduced, probably the most important car in the post-war MG story. The 1960s and 1970s saw the lively little Midget and the best-selling model of them all, the MGB. So loved was the 'B' that more than a decade after being discontinued it was reintroduced as the limited-production RV8 — an unprecedented event.
The story is brought right up to date in the second edition of this authoritative book, which describes the full evolution of the MGF and TF, the range of performance saloons developed since 2000 — the ZR, ZS and ZT — and the tragic closure of Longbridge when MG went into receivership in April 2005.
Motoring writer Malcolm Green, an acknowledged expert on the marque, describes every post-war model in detail — including a look at special variants and at MG's impressive record in motorsport.
The book features driving impressions, buying hints, specifications and a selection of superb colour illustrations. |
