Introduction to the Astra
The Astra covered by this repair manual was first introduced to the European market in Autumn 1991, and was discontinued in February 1998. Although mechanically there is a fundamental similarity to the previous Astra/Belmont/Kadett models. the later version is much improved and refined in all respects. This manual covers models fitted with petrol engines, but other models in the range were available with diesel engines.
Five petrol engines were available in the Astra range, although not all of the engines were available in all markets. The engines available were 1.4, 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 litre single overhead camshaft (SOHC) versions, and 1.4,1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 litre double overhead camshaft (DOHC) versions. All of the engines use fuel injection, and are fitted with a range of emission control systems, with the exception of a 1.4 litre carburettor engine available in certain markets. All the engines are of a well-proven design and, provided regular maintenance is carried out, are unlikely to give trouble.
The Astra was available in 4-door Saloon, 3- and 5-door Hatchback, Estate and Van bodystyles (although the GSi model was only available in Hatchback form), with a wide range of fittings and interior trim depending on the model specification. Fully-independent front suspension is fitted, with the components attached to a subframe assembly; the rear suspension is semi-independent, with a torsion beam and trailing arms. A five-speed manual gearbox is fitted as standard to all models, and four-speed electronically-controlled automatic transmission is available as an option on certain models. A wide range of standard and optional equipment is available within the Astra range to suit most tastes, including an anti-lock braking system.
For the home mechanic, the Astra is a straightforward vehicle to maintain, and most of the items requiring frequent attention are easily accessible. |
