Written from hands-on experience gained from the complete strip-down and rebuild of several Astra vehicles in Haynes' Project Workshop, this manual can help you understand, care for and repair your Astra. The practical step-by-step explanations, linked to over 900 photos, will help you get the job done right. Regular servicing and maintenance of your Astra can help maintain its resale value, save you money, and make it safer to drive.
The Vauxhall/Opel (Holden) Astra-H model was introduced in the UK in May 2004 as a replacement for the previous Astra, the 'G' model. It is available in 3- and 5-door Hatchback and Estate versions with 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 litre petrol engines and various diesel engines (not covered in this manual). All engines are of the normally-aspirated four-cylinder, in-line type, featuring double overhead camshafts. 1.6 and 2.0 litre turbocharged engines are also available, but are not covered in this manual.
The manual gearbox is of the five-speed all synchromesh type, and a four-speed electronically-controlled automatic transmission is available as an option on 1.8 litre models. An 'Easytronic' manual/automatic transmission is also optionally available on 1.4 and 1.6 litre models. All models have front-wheel-drive with fully-independent front suspension, and semi-independent rear suspension with a torsion beam and trailing arms.
A wide range of standard and optional equipment is available within the Astra range to suit most tastes, including electro/hydraulic power steering, air conditioning, remote central locking, electric windows, electric sunroof, anti-lock braking system, electronic alarm system and supplemental restraint systems. For the home mechanic, the Astra is a relatively straightforward vehicle to maintain, and most of the items requiring frequent attention are easily accessible.
