The author of this manual has the conviction that the only way in which a meaningful and easy to follow text can be written is first to do the work himself, under conditions similar to those found in the average household. As a result, the hands seen in the photographs are those of the author.
Although the BSA 350, 500 and 600 cc models are no longer in production, an example of the B31 model that had covered a considerable mileage was deliberately selected so that the conditions encountered during the strip down and rebuild would be typical of those encountered by the average owner/rider. Unless specially mentioned and therefore considered essential, BSA service tools have not been used. There is invariably alternative means of loosening or slackening some vital component, when service tools are not available and risk of damage is to be avoided at all costs...
The clear, step-by-step illustrated instructions cover the dismantling, inspection. repair and refitting of the engine, clutch and gearbox, cooling, system (where fitted), fuel and lubrication systems, ignition and exhaust systems, frame and forks, wheels, brakes and tyres, and the electrical system. Routine maintenance, complete specifications and detailed fault diagnosis procedures are also included. Only Haynes completely strip and rebuild the motorcycle on which each manual is based. |
