Introduction to the BMW 3-Series and Z4
The models covered by this manual are equipped with either a 2.5, 2.8 or 3.0 liter six-cylinder engine. These engines are of the Dual Overhead Camshaft (DOHC) design. They also are equipped with a computer-controlled ignition and fuel delivery system with electronic fuel injection.
Transmissions are either five- or six-speed manual or four- or five-speed automatic with overdrive. Power is transmitted from the transmission to the rear axle through a two-piece driveshaft. The differential is bolted to a crossmember and drives the wheels through driveaxles equipped with inner and outer constant velocity joints. The front suspension is of the MacPherson strut design, with the coil spring/shock absorber unit making up the upper suspension link. The rear suspension is a fully independent multi-link design. Power assisted rack-and-pinion steering is standard. Power assisted front and rear disc brakes are standard on all models. A wide range of standard and optional equipment is available for all models. |
