Behind every great enterprise, and the Lancia Delta 54 it was in effect there are always great men. We want to dedicate this book to all of them, especially to the mechanics who have always done their job with passion, dedication and enthusiasm doing their best in all conditions.
In this publication we wanted to bring all of their testimonies and their stories, but are so many that an entire book would not be enough. We are content, at the moment of just some "pills"...
"I well remember the era of the Delta 54," says Rino Buschiazzo, in Abarth since 1977. "In 1985 I went with Markku Alen at Rally Co/line di Romagna. Driving the 54 to the limit, the driver could not understand how the wheels were turned. Then I applied the yellow scotch at the center of the top steering wheel rim. A reference that from that moment on it was used by alL During Rally Algarve, however, the dust invaded the cockpit because of the resin body was not very finished. To seal the cracks we immediatly intervened with grease and brush. In the same rally, Alen broke the rear differential, but was not replaced because we could not unscrew a bolt. Once back at home, we modified the fixing system in order to work in the race".
"We arrived at the 1985 RAC with the cars completed just in time", recalls Roberto Vittone. "Before the Donington Park's special stages, Toivonen had problems with the clutch: was impossible to change gears. In the rush of the intervention we did not fix Toivonen's seat, so he drove in the stage just holded by the seat belts. He was the fastest on the road, and after the special stage we settled everything".
"During the first test runs", says Giovanni Baldi, in Abarth since 1971 working thirteen years in the test room, "engine blocks cracked due to vibration and the volumetric weight. So we reinforced them in the aspiration area. Another problem was the frequent breakage of the distribution's carter, especially on dirty roads. During the 1986 Monte-Carlo Alen's car retired for breaking the connection between camshaft and ignition's instigator. For the next race we went back to the 037 well tested system".
"After a first development stage, the 54 engine proved its reliability, but it was also very delicate because of the high vibrations transmitted by the car",tells Elio Baldi, Giovanni's brother, who entered in Abarth as well from 1971, working on engines during the races. "An initial weakness was the oil pump belt: cold temperatures could break it, and replacing it was very complicated. It happened at the 1986 Rallye Monte-Carlo on all our three racing cars: we risked the withdrawal, but fortunately we were able to replace them in time".
