Foreword
It is not often that someone you have a lot of respect for contacts you and asks for your help. Norm Darwin is the author of the first motoring book that I ever purchased, "The History of Holden since 1917". From this book I learnt so much about the Holden cars that I came to love and appreciate. He also started me on a 16 year quest, for in the back of this book he mentioned that there was a promotional HK Monaro model.
In my search I found several companies that copied part of the model, to make various kits, plus several people that had one for themselves. I finally found one for sale in 1999. The ironic part was that 1 had just sold my HK GTS. So I was very excited about his new venture into a Monaro specific book. Norm introduces a new side to the Monaro history, through his employment with GM-H, covering much of the behind the scenes detail that many of us give little thought. This book gives readers an appreciation of the difficulty of bringing a car from concept to showroom reality. Some of the politics, changes etc.
The image selection, including GM-H archive, personal collection, brochures, colour charts, magazine covers and advertisements, are also a great reference source. With Monaro values rising to very high prices, for some models, more information is needed for prospective buyers, restorers and general enthusiast. It should always be expected that when some items have a high monetary value, some people will try to falsely present some cars. The information in this book will become a valuable guide in determining authenticity but as new information comes to light it is not an absolute definite answer. Examples have been found of body tags being reproduced. Some with minor changes to trim and paint information, others with model number changes. The consequences of the latter can have a severe impact on price and authenticity. There are also genuine cars that do not 100% fit the mould, making them appear to be forgeries.
With all the interest in the Monaro over the last decade, this book should be another valuable library addition for many Holden enthusiasts, both interested in the older HK to HG and HQ to HZ models to the new V2 and VZ models.
