The most comprehensive guide to the renovation, restoration and development history of all post-war pre-unit BSA singles including the Gold Star, B, M and C series, plus unit four-strokes and Bantams
304 pages - 250 illustrations - 100,000 words-extensive data Plus how to recognize parts, improve specifications and maintain these classic motorcycles.
Acknowledgements:
As the fourth title in the series this book should have been easier to write, but in practice the sheer profusion of BSA models gave problems. Despite these, the prime aim of providing parts identification has been followed even at the expense of some of the more standard techniques included in the other titles. The appendices with the basics of dating, colour and specifications remain in full, along with much more.
Again I have to thank my good friend Don Mitchell who supplied most of the basic data from his stock of second-hand motorcycle literature. Other material of this type came from Dick Lewis, long-time BSA specialist at Weybridge although now retired, and some gaps on export models were filled by Bill Litant, President of the BSA Owners Club of New England.
I am especially indebted to Michael Payne who went through the whole manuscript to check on all Gold Star details. His very considerable knowledge of these machines was reflected in the many detail points he raised and corrections or additions made to the book.
The pictures and line drawings came mainly from
the EMAP archives which hold the old Motor Cycle Weekly files, for which my grateful thanks. Others were from the Motor Cycle News files, courtesy of editor Malcolm Gough, and a number from Amal, BSA and Lucas material originally.
A number of pictures carried the imprint of a professional and photos used came from Cecil Bailey, Frank Dann, Keystone Press Agency, Bruce Main-Smith, Donald Page, Planet News, Brian Smith, Studio Cave and W. Wickstone. As usual all the pictures were returned to their files after publication and I have tried to make contact to clear copyright. If my letter failed to reach you or I have used an unmarked print without realizing this, please accept my apologies.
Finally, my thanks to Tim Parker for conceiving the idea of this series and to Tony Thacker, my present editor, for his help and assistance in completing this volume.
