Drag Racing's Golden Age

In the 1960s, drag racing evolved from a "run what ya brung" grassroots effort to a full-blown professional motorsport. Along the way, it created some of the most exciting racing and race cars ever built. And luckily for us, Bob McClurg was there with a camera.

McClurg is an accomplished magazine writer and photographer, but he's best known for his drag racing images of the 1960s and 1970s. His lens captured all the action of the Roadsters, Gassers, Altereds, Top Fuelers, Funny Cars, Pro/Stocks, and even the
modern age of nostalgia drag racing.

Now for first time, McClurg's best drag racing photos brought together in one volume — a book every drag racing fan will have to see.

Follow each of the classes as they evolve, each year bringing more speed and lower elapsed times. Follow the exciting careers of "Big Daddy Don Garlits, Don "Snake" Prudhomme, "TV Tommy," Ivo, "Wild Willie" Borsch, "Big John" Mazinanian, and many, many more.

You will even see the humble beginnings of modern su Kenny Bernstein and John Force. With more 350 color and black-and-white photos, this is an amazing visual history of the sport's wild years – the Golden Age of drag racing.

Drag racing today is exciting enough — Top Fuelcrs and Funny Cars in the 4's, blasting through the quarter mile in a wall of white noise, reaching the finish line almost before spectators can react to the explosive start. But today's sport has a certain homogeneity — for example, if you stripped any two modern Funny Cars of. paint, it'd be tough to tell them apart.

There was a time in drag racing, though, when creativity ran rampant, and innovation was the name of the game. Every class had its Niles, but every car had its own look, every team had its own agenda, and every driver had his own style. From the 1960s through the 1970s, the sport grew and changed, and it all happened in front of Bob McClurg's camera.

Bob McClurg started taking drag photos in the `60s, before he was even Out of high school. That led him to a career in photojournalism that has produced some of the most memorable drag racing images any of us have seen. .And there's more than just Diggers, Funnies, Gassers & Altercds — Bob also shot the early Roadsters, the rise and fall of the AA/Fucl Altereds„ the genesis of Pro/Stock, and the first generation of rear-engined dragsters. You'll also see the big names of the day — Stone, Woods & Cook, "Wild Willy" Borsch, and others - along with the unknowns that became today's big names; guys like John Force and Kenny Bernstein.

And of course, there are the drag racing eternals, like "Big Daddy" Don Garlits..
