Introduction to the Holden Commodore

The Holden Commodore is available in four door sedan, station wagon and utility body styles. Series I six cylinder models are fitted with the 3.6L Alloytec engine available in two power output options. A 175 kW engine as standard, or an optional 190 kW engine. Both engines feature multi-point fuel injection. With the introduction of the Series II six cylinder in 2009, a 3.0L Spark Ignition Direct Injection (SIDI) engine was added. This engine is fitted to the Omega and Berlina models. A 3.6L 210 kW SIDI engine is also used on 5V6, Calais and Calais V Series models.

The 6.0L Generation IV V8 engine is carried over from the previous VZ Series. Active Fuel Management (AFM) was introduced in Series ll models. This is where the engine management system will switch off cylinders when power demand is low to reduce fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. The 6.2 litre V8 is fitted to HSV models.

All engines use multi-port fuel injection. All models have front-engine, rear wheel drive configurations.
Power from the engine passes through one of five transmissions, a five-speed manual transmission, six-speed manual transmission, a four-speed electronic automatic, a five-speed electronic automatic or a six-speed electronic automatic transmission to the rear differential.

The independently-sprung rear wheels are driven by two driveaxles from the solid-mounted final-drive unit. The independent front suspension features MacPherson struts and power assisted rack and pinion steering.

Disc brakes are used on all four wheels and an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) is available on all models.
