Description

Chevron Publishing, Hardbound,256 Pages, ISBN: 9771031612005 - First Published, 1993 -**VERY RARE BOOK IN UNREAD CONDITION**

This book, The Great Race 13, is the official story of the Tooheys 1000 at Mount Panorama, Bathurst, on October 3, 1993. It encompasses more than 120,000 words, charts, statistics and folklore and is illustrated by the best photographs chosen from a shot list of around 6000 from that fabulous week of motor racing action.

It details how Larry Perkins, a Melbourne engineer, took a single Australian car (and Australian engines) to Bathurst and beat the biggest and the best Mount Panorama could offer in its annual festival of speed.

Perkins was up against mighty strong opposition in very similar cars for 1993. Past 1000 winners like Peter Brock, Jim Richards, Mark Skaife and Win Percy were running similar cars while in the opposition camp more 1000 winners like Dick Johnson and John Bowe, and would-be winners like Glenn Seton and former motor sport world champions Alan Jones and Wayne Gardner were just as adamant the race was going to be theirs.

In 1993 the entire race week was enthralling, as the days slipped by the two main protagonists were the one-car Castrol team of Larry Perkins and Gregg Hansford pitted against the two-car Winfield Team of, mainly, 1992 race winners Mark Skaife and Jim Richards.

It's a folk hero story about a real down to earth team and how they won the 1993 Mountain battle.

We all need more stories like this.

This 13th edition of The Great Race. is the second that has been produced and available for readers within eight weeks of the race being held. Back in 1992 Chevron made the decision to publish its two annual books onto the market for Christmas of the same year in which the events were held.

It takes an enthusiastic, dedicated and tightly-knit team to be able to produce more than 550 book pages in that time, books being more time-consuming and difficult to manufacture than magazines. The team encompasses many more than our own editorial, advertising and administration staff - and the 20 editorial researcher/contributors and photographers we use from the events at home and around the world during the year.

As well as these people, we need to thank the efforts of our designers, our filmers and printers, and our distributors all of whom work to deadlines which aim to get the books into our subscribing clients hands, and into selected outlets at a time when the Christmas rush is really starting to hot up.

Our special thanks go to the people who, while holding down other jobs just as important as ours, manage to complete work for us in record times, with record accuracy. Sometimes it's not easy.

The annual Tooheys 1000 touring car endurance race at Bathurst's Mount Panorama is currently the longest continuous-running single event on the Australian calendar. It started in 1960 and has been held every year since, rain, hail or shine - and has grown in stature with age.

Today the race commands a huge television audience and also attracts 40,000-plus spectators to NSW's oldest inland city situated about 211km from Sydney, the nation's largest city. As a sporting event it generates an enormous amount of business, both for locals and outsiders, and has turned Mount Panorama into Bathurst's prime tourist attraction eclipsing its gold-panning sites and historic towns like Sofala.

It underpins the fact that cultural and sporting events like this one (broadly known as 'Bathurst, on the first Sunday in October'), properly handled over the years, can help create a brighter future for area where traditional circumstances must change over the years.

We at Chevron Publishing Group are proud to be able to play a part, however small, in helping to cement the future for the people of Bathurst - and to maintaining some tradition in Australian motor sport.
