Description

By: Richard A Copping .

The Volkswagen Transporter is one of the best loved and most recognisable motor vehicles of all time. The favourite transport of surfers everywhere, and the shape that can be found on a thousand greetings cards, album covers and keyrings, the Volkswagen Type 2 'bus' was launched to the world's media in 1949 and became the first of a new breed — the ancestor of today's people carrier. Available in various versions, including the Delivery Van, Pick-up and, of course, minibus, the Transporter also became popular with convertors who made them into camper vans for a newly motorised class of holidaymaker. Richard A. Copping describes the development, production and use of the classic first- and second-generation Transporter, which he complements with rare and colourful illustrations from archive brochures: a great evocation of the 1950s and '60s.

Marque expert and lifelong Volkswagen enthusiast Richard A. Copping has written over a dozen books covering a variety of models, and regularly contributes articles to a number of magazines.

    VW Camper & Microbus book

Posted by Rod on 10th Mar 2022

A compact but informative publication containing a very good overview of the VW commercial and recreational series. The book offers a developmental background and dates for the many major and minor body and safety feature improvements. Production figures are included over the lifetime of the series as well as a detailed explanation of just what led to the camper-van conversion craze. There are many colour scenes and numerous sections from original advertising material. This book is a worthy inclusion to the extensive Shire Library series and should please anyone with a soft spot for the now iconic 'Kombi' or perhaps even wet the appetite to find out more !
