Updated 2010 edition

The name BMW stands for sportiness, dynamism, high tech, and designs characterized by a timeless yet functional elegance.

People own a BMW for "sheer driving pleasure", as one of the advertising slogans of the Munich company puts it.

The sporty image goes back along way. It applies to the earliest products manufactured under the sign of the white and blue propeller in the early 1930s.

Anyone who says BMW has legendary cars in mind, such as the pre-War 328, the 507 of the mid 1950s, and the M1 of the late 1970s, and can recount innumerable motor racing victories up to and including Formula 1.

BMW signifies not least the attempt to make ordinary folk mobile with the Isetta and the 700. They, too, are the subject of this book, a book which attempts to trace the origins of the marque, lost in the obscurity of the First World War.
