This programme brings together two classic films - a superb black and white report on the 1963 TT and one of Castrol's finest colour productions of this period, Golden Mountain.
The reproduction quality is not up to current standards, but the best of modern technology has been used to enhance many of the images which have stood the test of time in geneyally excellent shape.
The 1961 and 1963 Isle of Man IT Races both represent daringly dramatic years in the long history of the famous event. The former heralded the first time any rider had ever won three races in one TI' meeting. The second featured the exciting return of the Italian Gilera team headed by ex-works rider Geoff Duke.
Mike Hailwood was only a youngster when he travelled to the Island in 1961, but except for last-lap machine trouble when leading the 350cc race, would have returned with all four major international trophies. Even the formidable privately-entered MV Agusta, ridden by Rhodesian Gary Hocking couldn't defeat the Oxford rider, who crowned his week with a loomph average speed for the Senior race.
Two years later the 1963 TT saw Phil Read and John Hartle on the Scuderia Duke Gileras, pitting their skills against the MV now ridden by Hailwood.
This programme is a fine record of those two magnificent years, which in a way were the last before the monumental Japanese onslaught by Honda and Yamaha, although they had already made their presence felt when Hailwood won two races in the same day in 1961 aboard the Honda rocket bikes.
The sounds as well as the sights make this DVD a real collector's piece. A record not only of Hailwood's memorable feats but the last glory days of Norton, Matchless, AJS et al.
