Troubleshoot your transmission, Full rebuilds for reliablity, Performance modifications, Honda B-Series transaxle case study, Complete T-5 (Rear-Drive) Rebuild

This book is an introduction to the fascinating technology of automotive manual transmissions, as well as a hands-on guide to repairing, rebuilding, and modifying any transmission, transaxle, or clutch. Until now, the only books available have been either dry, theoretical texts intended for engineers, or factory repair manuals intended for experienced technicians. This book will bridge that gap and give you, the home mechanic, a clear picture of how transmissions work, what causes them to stop working, and how to repair them.

Transmissions have more in common than you might suspect, so even if your specific car or transmission isn't mentioned, 90 percent of the information in this book will still apply to your situation. Because of this general approach, this book is not a substitute for the factory shop manual, but rather a companion to it. It covers information that is glossed over or completely ignored in most manuals, such as detailed troubleshooting procedures that could save you valuable time and labor costs.

Chapters 1 and 2 cover the basics of manual transmissions and transmission terminology. The later chapters assume that you understand those basics, so it helps to read the early chapters before jumping to the rebuild section. Even if you're comfortable with manual transmission technology, the discussions of gear design and lubrication technology should be informative.

Chapters 3 and 4 discuss the procedures and techniques used to properly diagnose and repair transmission problems, while chapters 5 and 6 put that information to use. Chapter 5 presents a rebuild of the popular TREMEC T-5, which is a fairly typical example of a rear-wheel-drive transmission. Chapter 6 covers the Honda B-series transaxle with the same depth, and can be used as a guide to the process of rebuilding a front-wheel-drive transaxle.

Chapters 7 and 8 introduce the topics of manual transmission modification and clutch technology. Chapter 7 is a good starting point for choosing modifications or discussing the finer points of racing transmission setup with your builder. Finally, Chapter 8 gives you the ammunition you need to select a clutch that will meet your demands without breaking your budget or your car.
