Description

Compiled by R.M.Clarke, Brooklands Books, Softbound, 172 Pages, A-ERA34GP, ISBN: 9781855202672

- Model Launch - Racing - Hill Climbing - Technical Data - Development - History - 1100 & 1500cc - 2 Litre - E Type - R.4D - Plus John Lloyd's The Story of ERA

This book has come about because of an accident. Whilst on holiday in Ireland I broke my heel and had to be flown home 10 days early. This gave me a chance to do something that I had always wanted to do - research ERA. I had in fact acquired John Lloyd's fascinating post war book "The Story of ERA" sometime earlier and read it with interest. Armed with articles from our archive, I read them through in chronological order and passed my wheelchair days absorbed in the subject. It then struck me that perhaps others would like to do the same - hence the book.

We are as always indebted to those who allow us to reproduce their copyright material. Our thanks in this instance go especially to John Blunsden of Motor Racing Publications, who generously allowed us to include the whole of John Lloyd's book as well as to our regular supporters - the publishers of Autocar, Autosport, Classic and Sportscar, Light Car, Motor, Motor Sport, Motoring Life, Old Motor, Road & Track, Sports Cars Illustrated, Sporting Cars and Supercar Classics.

It is a little short of astonishing that such a small number of cars was able to make such a lasting impression over such a relatively short period of time. But make an impression they most certainly did. Today, all motor racing enthusiasts know the legend of ERA, even if they cannot recite chapter and verse about Romulus, Remus, RIA and others.

With 60 years separating us from the time when the first ERA appeared, the legend has become more than a little distorted. It is hoped that this book will help to set the record straight, by making available again material written about the cars when they were new.
