A Civil Aviation Authority bicentennial project

The outcome of more than 30 years of research and eight years of joint work by the authors, Flypast is a fascinating and detailed account of aviation in Australia, from 1843 to 1988.

Flypast deals with every aspect of Australian civil aviation with general reference to military aviation and space, in an encyclopaedic format incorporating about 450 black and white photographs.

Text entries include flight, the design and manufacture of aircraft of all kinds, the history of aviation companies, the achievements of Australians overseas, government bodies, the laws and regulations.
Above all, Flypast deals with aviation events, who flew where, from what point, how high and how far and with what equipment.

Eleven appendixes list selected firsts in Australian aviation, people of note, Oswald Watt Gold Medallists, scheduled airline services within Australia and international services, balloons and aircraft prior to 1921, aircraft registered between 1921 and 1946, names on aircraft, military aircraft serials, ships that carried aircraft and flights into and Out of Australia from 1919 to 1939.

Flypast is an invaluable reference to all aviation authorities, specialists and enthusiasts.

Neville Parnell is an aviation photographer and historian whose interest and enthusiasm for all aspects of aviation has continued for 30 years.

As an historian he has written many articles for aviation publications both in Australia and overseas. For seven years he was editor of an aviation historical journal. With a fellow enthusiast, he has published a history entitled Australian Air Force Since 1911. His own book Whispering Death, the History of the RAAF Beaufighter Squadrons was well received. Since that book he has concentrated on compiling and preparing this general history of Australian aviation.

In his spare time, Neville has been judge for numerous airshows around Australia and he photographs aircraft both here and overseas.

He has held a light aircraft licence and currently works within the aviation industry.

Trevor Boughton graduated Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Melbourne and was employed in the construction industry in Australia and Papua New Guinea where he was involved in and was responsible for various aviation projects. In 1959 he was a founding member of the Aviation Historical Society of Australia, acting as its secretary, journal editor and later co-editor. His interest in aviation spans 30 years during which he established his extensive documentary collection.

Trevor has contributed material to numerous works by other authors both in Australia and overseas.
