The idea of building the Volvo car was born over a dish of crayfish!
It was during the summer of 1924 that Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson made up their minds to design and manufacture a new car. It was a bold project, to which the two founders of Volvo and a small group of car enthusiasts devoted all their energy and abilities.
On April 14, 1927, the first Volvo rolled out of the plant on Hisingen in Gothenburg. The adventure had truly begun.
The first year's production was modest and, in fact, it took ten years before the first 10 000 cars had been manufactured. Nowadays, this same number is produced in six to seven working days.
Over the years Volvo has grown into an international company with a wide range of industrial activities including transport equipment, energy and food. Volvo ranks amongst the fifty largest companies in the world, with sales of SEK 87.2 thousand million in 1984 and with 68 200 employees, of whom 50 000 work in Sweden.
The Volvo Car Corporation is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Volvo Group and is completely responsible for the car side of the business. The Volvo Car Corporation had a turnover, in 1984, of SEK 30.2 thousand million and 379 500 cars were manufactured; this figure includes the Volvo 300 Series which are built in Holland.
