Description

Produced between 1972 and 1980. the high-performance, street-based Kawasaki motorcydes enhanced the modem superbike standard created by the 1968 Honda CB750. This was the era of the 'Universal Japanese Motorcycle', and the big 903cc and 1015cc four-cylinder Kawasakis were responsible for accelerating the celebrated 'horsepower war' of the big four Japanese motorcycle manufacturers during this time.

This book concentrates on one of the most important variations of the famous Kawasaki 'Z' four-stroke family; the Kawasaki (K)Z1000 Z1-R models, which were manufactured between 1977 and 1979. The sensational new Z1-R with its brave (some would say controversial) café racer styling broke new ground for sports motorcycle styling, and signified the beginning of the end of the conventional 'Universal Japanese Motorcycle'.

Thirty years on, the (K)Z1000 Z1-R has emerged as one of Kawasaki's most desirable and sought after collectables from the 1970s. Motorcyde production racing was the showcase for these superbikes, and the big Kawasakis dominated until the competition ultimately caught up. The strict rules enforced in Australia and New Zealand for box stock motorcycle production racing attracted worldwide attention from motorcycle manufacturers, the media and, most importantly, consumers.

This was the very same environment in which some of the world's leading Grand Prix race stars of the era earned their stripes.

This book is the ultimate collection of Kawasaki (K)1000 Z1-R information. It details the history of the original concept, the technical specifications, features and styling of the (K)Z1000 Z1-R models, as well as production numbers, and model and market differences. Restoration information and component identification will help the most discerning restorer complete his restoration to the highest level of accuracy. Model variations such as the 'Z1-R Mark II' models, the rare limited-edition variations and the quickest street-based motorcycle produced in the 1970s, the lightning-fast 21-R Turbo', are all documented.

Lavishly illustrated in colour throughout and containing much information that has never before been made available, Kawasaki (K)Z1000 Z1-R will help the reader appreciate the ever-evolving Japanese motorcycle styling and the introduction of various technologies as standard equipment, and just how sensational and unique these motorbikes really were.
